Voluntary building
rating systems play an important role in popularizing the concept of green
design. As per international trends, the leading rating systems abroad
have been devised to suit the building industry of the country where they
were developed.
In the Indian context, these foreign rating systems would be useful only for AC buildings. Since a large number of buildings in India are non-AC and that too existing in varied climatic conditions, it is imperative to have a nationally relevant rating system. The bottom line: GRIHA is that much-needed Indian-centric green building rating system.

Solar Water Heater
An array of 24 solar water-heating panels (inclined at 70 degrees) integrated with the parapet wall of the living quarters, deliver upto 2000 litres of hot water everyday. This is an innovative way of tapping solar energy, and reduces the fuel cost associated with heating of water.
RETREAT building of TERI, constructed over 3 years on an area of 3000 sq.m. in Gual Pahari, Gurgaon, is a model training complex which demonstrates how a truly sustainable habitat should be like. The energy planning in this 30-room hostel ensures a saving of 184 kW (peak).
