Introduction

High Efficiency Toliets are the toilets that provide at least 20% water savings over the federal standard of 1.6 gallons per flush (gpf) and still meets the most rigorous standards for flush performance. They generally use 1.28 gpf and result in water savings of 6 litres vs 4.8 litres (in case of 1.6 gpf).

In homes, the amount of water consumed in toilets (approximately 30%) is more than in any other appliance or fixture. In addition, toilets often leak which becomes a major source of wasted water. Using a high efficiency unit (in place of 1.6 gallon flush units) can save up to 8,760 gallons of water each year for a family of four with average daily flushes of six each. In fact, in countries and regions where water is scarce, governments can offer rebates on high efficiency toilets to encourage citizens to save water.
