Introduction

Ventilation to cool the thermal mass of the building during the night in order to improve comfort during the day is nocturnal convective cooling. Givoni’s rule of thumb for nocturnal convective cooling is that the indoor temperature is less than the outdoor maximum temperature by nearly half the diurnal range in outdoor temperature, providing the envelope and internal gains are modest and thermal capacity is high. Nocturnal convective ventilation is applicable if the maximum ambient temperature is too high for comfort ventilation and the diurnal range is sufficiently large to bring the indoor maximum temperature down into the comfort range. For example, if the minimum outdoor temperature is 24oC, the threshold value of the maximum outdoor temperature is 40oC if the indoor temperature is not to exceed 32oC.
